So you’re thinking about having plant medicine for healing?
Ayahuasca, psilocybin, wachuma (san pedro) and marijuana are just some of the plant medicines offered at a plant medicine natural healing retreat. Places like Peru, Columbia, Hawaii, Jamaica are just some of the places people consider travelling to experience plant medicine.
Although it still may be considered taboo to some, hallucinogenic plants are finally getting duly noticed as potent medicine for mental and physical health. We may as well call it “desperately seeking spiritual awakening“. We can thank the sacred plant, Cannabis, and the activists for making that happen.
Here are some of the reasons people choose to go on a plant medicine retreat.
1) Looking to completely change their diet and habits
Many people who are seeking change in their lives, also want an instant fix. Although there is no such thing as an instant fix to bad habits, trying plant medicine at guided spiritual retreats for diet and habit change can work very well. In most instances with plant medicine retreats, a special diet is required at least 2 weeks prior and two weeks after a ceremony. The reason for this is to purify the body and so that the plant medicine gives you the best results. Part of the diet change usually means abstaining from the following: pork, red meat, spicy food, alcohol, caffeine, pharmaceuticals, cheese, fermented foods, yogurt, chemical sweeteners, protein powders, chocolate, peanuts and junk food.
For many a diet change like this can be very challenging. Our society is so ingrained with these foods. However, changing your diet can also allow a lot of healing to occur for your health and wellbeing. It will give your body the necessary rest it needs to prepare itself for plant medicine. Equally important is that it is preparing you for a new life and conscious transformation.
2) Seeking a safe and spiritual awakening atmosphere to connect with like minded souls
When people are going through a transition time in their lives, they are usually making lots of changes and having a big spiritual awakening. It’s really nice make a healing connection with all the people at a natural healing retreat who are also going through similar big changes. Being around a tribe of people who are about to experience the plants with you at the same time is both comforting and exciting.
There is definitely a purpose to being with others of like mind during our transition times. Having others to talk to about our experiences and feeling the freedom to just “be”. The fact that most of the people we meet at the retreats are new to us, gives us the opening to speak freely about our “altered experiences”. Having open sharing times with a trained shaman is a very comforting and nurturing experience. We want to feel safe and connected and plant medicine retreats provide that experience.
3) Get off of pharmaceutical and/or recreational drugs and alcohol
There are all kinds of ways to challenge ourselves. Some people do it by climbing a mountain or scuba diving. The most profound and challenging ordeals is to drink Ayahuasca. It is in a way the ultimate adventure. – Graham Hancock
This is a great reason to choose plant medicine, especially an Ayahuasca retreat. Many people would not necessarily understand why someone would go on a retreat to do “drugs” to get off drugs. In the case of Ayahuasca, it is definitely not something that would be considered recreational. I consider it more of a spiritual awakening process that starts long before plant medicine and after it.
Most people who want to try Ayahuasca have a calling to it which may start several months in advance of actually trying it. Only those who are ready to experience the dose of nature reality are ready for it. It brings us back to nature and has long lasting effects on our consciousness.
The intense bitterness of Ayahuasca and its effect is NOT conducive to wanting over and over again like a typical pharmaceutical or street drug. However, the effect of Ayahuasca after having abused recreational drugs or alcohol can be profound! The reason for this, is instead of concealing mental anguish, it is likely to bring it out. I consider it to be medicine similar to the idea of an “expectorant” vs “suppressant”. The purpose is to bring out the inner toxins vs keeping them locked inside. In my opinion, this is one of the best reasons to try a natural healing retreat with plant medicine.
4) Wanting to feel a connection to mother earth
Lets face it, the earth is going through a lot of shifts with all the havoc mankind has been causing the last century. We, as humans are part of this ecosystem called earth and our bodies have the capacity to “feel” the pain of the earth as well. Part of the global spiritual awakening that is happening is the desire to connect more to the earth, the plants and the ecosystems. Spending time away from technology, going on a natural healing retreat, connecting to the smells, sights and sounds of nature gives us the feeling of wholeness and connectedness. People are looking to connect the dots to their mind body and spirit. There’s a reason so many people connected to the movie “Avatar”. We are desperately seeking an active connection to nature. When we understand the importance of connecting to nature, we begin to find clarity. Choosing to partake in plant medicine retreats will definitely give you that connection freely and easily and stay with you for a long time to come.
5) Seeking help for depression, PTSD or other negative programming
A lot of people do not know that one quarter of the homeless people in the US are veterans. That’s an astounding percentage. This is mostly due to the stress and trauma left in their psyches after experiencing war. Years of counselling or pharmaceutical drugs often fail to deal with PTSD because the root cause is not addressed. This is where plant medicine at a natural healing retreat can truly be of great assistance.
There are also many people who are simply chronically depressed and cannot find a way out of their own negative thinking. According to national survey data released by the CDC, “Between 2011 and 2014, approximately one in 9 Americans of all ages reported taking at least one antidepressant medication in the last month. Three decades ago, less than one in 50 people did.”1
Antidepressants can cause a myriad of side effects and must be taken regularly for an “indefinite” period of time. Whereas plant medicine is taken only during the time spent at the plant medicine retreat and has long term results. It may require that you visit it twice within a year depending on the severity of the issue, or it may happen quicker. Every one is different and there is no one size fits all for healing.
Depression and anxiety is a side effect of people feeling a lack of connection to each other and the earth itself.
This is why we are seeing a massive shift and spiritual awakening happening on the planet. Using plant medicine for healing can be potent and powerful for releasing chronic mental anguish.
As the writer of this blog and a person who has been to an Ayahuasca retreat, I feel truly blessed to have witnessed this beautiful healing first hand, not only in myself, but with so many others.
From veterans recovering from PTSD, to people with multiple mental or physical health challenges, plant medicines are now being discovered as a gateway to health.
6) Looking for profound personal transformation and healing
Taking plant medicine for personal transformation and spiritual awakening is the number one reason most people consider it. There are times in our lives where we just want a RESET button to start over in our minds and hearts. The choice to take plant medicine is in itself a profound thing. It used to be completely taboo to even talk about it with friends or family. Although I would not exactly call it mainstream, it is definitely a subject that we can speak about with more freedom than we have in the past.
Many shamans around the world have known the profound benefits of plant medicine for centuries. Now, the mainstream is beginning to take notice.
